DFW Hail Season Roof Checklist: What to Inspect Before Small Damage Becomes a Big Claim
Hail and wind events in North Texas can leave subtle roof damage that worsens over time. Use this quick checklist right after a storm and again 48 hours later.
1) Walk the perimeter first (ground-level only)
- Look for shingles in the yard or near downspouts.
- Check gutters for granule buildup.
- Note dents on metal vents, flashing, or fences (often a hail clue).
2) Check ceilings and attic signs
- New water spots or yellowing ceiling patches.
- Musty odors after rain.
- Damp insulation in attic corners.
3) Photograph everything before temporary fixes
Take date-stamped photos of visible damage, interior stains, and any debris patterns. Documentation helps speed up repair planning and insurance conversations.
4) Don’t delay minor repairs
Small punctures or lifted shingles can turn into decking and insulation damage after repeated rain cycles. Early repair usually costs less than delayed restoration.
5) Know when to call a pro
- You see active leaks or missing shingles.
- You’re unsure if damage is cosmetic or functional.
- You need written inspection notes for next steps.
